Story of the God Argus

ARGUS is the patron of the Brazilian secret service which, in addition to being a spy, was also a demigod. The myth was cultivated among secret agents as a kind of warning: keep your eyes open, be suspicious of everything and, if possible, don't die. It was precisely the death of ARGUS that made him a model for the secret service in Brazil.

The tragedy of the spy demigod was told to Service agents still in the training phase. ARGUS had lived on the Peloponnese peninsula, where he had founded a city named after him. Thanks to a network of spies he had conceived and commanded, he had managed to expand his domain and keep it safe from invaders.

Once, having to send a secret message to a prince whose lands were on a route controlled by enemies, he had the head of one of his spies shaved to burn the message with a branding iron. After the agent's hair grew, he was sent to meet the prince and fulfilled his mission without arousing suspicion. The devices used by ARGUS to control its territory were so spectacular that they ended up calling the attention of Jupiter, who from the top of Olympus watched everything that happened on earth.

For a long time, Jupiter appreciated the achievements of ARGUS, until one day the ace of espionage died. Jupiter then summoned him to render on Olympus his valuable services that he had developed on earth. So that ARGUS could fulfill his new mission, Jupiter transformed him into a demigod, with a form as efficient as monstrous: his head was covered by a hundred eyes, which allowed him to see everything and know everything. So ARGUS never slept again, for while fifty eyes rested the other fifty kept the closest vigilance over everything that happened on Olympus. So ARGUS started to control the movement of the Gods, who just like men were not perfect.

Through the division of powers on Olympus, it was up to Pluto to reign over the dead in hell, but he was not content to rule only in the lower worlds. In order to install an eternal night on Olympus and thus expand its domains, Pluto conceived a plan. The idea was to kidnap the goddess Aurora and thus prevent her from announcing the arrival of the sun. But first, however, it was necessary to neutralize ARGUS, preventing the demigod spy from discovering the plan and warning Jupiter. Pluto went to meet ARGUS carrying an enchanted flute and, when he found him, began to play the instrument. From the flute came a pure sound that made ARGUS fall asleep, all one hundred eyes at once. Jupiter's informant was then murdered. And Aurora, stolen.

On that day, the sun did not come out, and the Universe was again made of darkness. When he awoke from his sleep, Jupiter was mad at seeing the Universe in disarray. Through the laughter that came from the nether worlds, the god of gods discovered who was responsible for the return to chaos. So he punished Pluto, trapping him in the pit of Hell, and then freed Aurora. Peace returned to reign on Olympus. But ARGUS was dead. Unable to bring his spy back to life, Jupiter paid him one last homage. From that day forward, the qualities of ARGUS were united into one, the wit, with which the few and good on Earth would be gifted. These men would become detectives, spies and secret agents, and it would be up to them, as one Service publication put it, "to lift the veil of appearances and perceive the enemy's intent."
